Room 13’s School Day re-enacting as it was in 1884

December 1, 2023

The bell rang and we lined up into perfect lines for Miss Jones to do a nail check. We curtsied and the boys bowed as we quietly walked into the class. Miss Jones wore a long purple dress and a frilly bonnet. We did handwriting first on chalkboards then Arithmetic too. The experience was strict and I liked that kind of strictness. I am definitely grateful to be a child these days. When it came to lunch we took our brown paper bags to eat our lunch. This was a really out-of-this-world experience and I was super lucky to do it.

School in 1864. When the bell rang we lined up in two lines and Miss Jones checked our nails. We were seated on our chairs and Miss Jones handed us black paper as black boards with chalk. For handwriting we did f’s in cursive, soon we did Spelling, followed by Arithmetic reciting our times tables. If the boys were being naughty Miss Jones pretended to whack them (as was done in those times) with her cane. School work was written on the board and we worked in silence. Bani Sharma

The bell rang and we lined up outside the school classroom as the teacher came closer and closer to check our nails and hands. We filed in quietly, girls, then boys, smallest to biggest. Miss Jones was wearing her long frilly dress and a bonnet. We did our work using chalk on a black piece of paper. It was a great experience! Kaelan Messingham
